About the artist
Welcome to Steven Ward Fine Art. Based in the historic maritime town of Cobh, County Cork, my work captures the ever-changing light, rugged coastlines, and sweeping skies of Ireland through original oil and pastel paintings.

Rooted in the coastal beauty of Cobh
Living and painting along Cork Harbour provides an endless dialogue with the sea. The dramatic tidal shifts, misty horizons, and luminous waters of southern Ireland shape each piece I create. My practice is driven by a deep reverence for the natural world and a desire to preserve fleeting moments of atmospheric drama on canvas and board.

The craft of oils and soft pastels
I work primarily in traditional oils and velvety soft pastels, alternating between mediums to best interpret texture and tone. Rich oil pigments allow for deep, tactile brushwork that conveys the raw power of breaking waves, while pastel enables pure, direct colour expression to render the delicate nuances of Irish coastal skies.

Behind the easel in County Cork
Every painting begins with outdoor studies, plein air sketches, or photographic impressions gathered along the Irish coastline. Back in the studio, these ideas evolve into refined compositions. Through my studio journal, I share the work in progress, technical discoveries, and stories behind each completed collection.
"Steven's seascape captures the exact mood and raw energy of the Cork coastline. The play of light in the oil work brings an incredible sense of calm and wonder into our home."
